Money-Saving Tips to Lower Your Electric Bill

Most people are just misinformed or are unaware of possible energy saving tricks

Some common ELECTRICITY MYTHS DEBUNKED ....

1.    It takes more energy to turn on a light than to leave it on - WRONG!

  • There's no power surge when you turn on a light.
  • Turning the light off ALWAYS saves electricity, even if it's for just a second.

2.    It takes more energy to turn on a computer than to leave it on - WRONG!

  • The surge when you turn on computers is now so tiny that you can't easily measure it. It happens for only a fraction of a second, and the surge itself is modest. In practical terms- there is no surge at all.
  • Turning the computer off ALWAYS saves electricity.

3.    It takes more energy to cool a house when you leave the air conditioner off all day - WRONG!

  • Cooling a hot house down at the end of the day ALWAYS takes less energy than leaving the A/C running all day, even if it's running on a high setting.

Did You Know???

  •  Moving the thermostat from 73 to 78 could cut your cooling costs in half.
  • You reduce your cooling bill for every 1 degree you raise your thermostat.
  • A ceiling fan or a fan that rotates back and forth can make a room appear nearly 4 degrees cooler.
  • Keeping your doors and vents shut in rooms that are not being used can save up to 3% on cooling costs.
  • Air leaks around entrance doors and windows can account for 15% to 30% of heating and cooling energy requirements.
  • Clean filters can save up to $60 a year on heating costs.
  • In the winter, lowering your thermostat by only 1 degree can reduce heating bills by 3%.
  • Appliances use up to 50% the amount of energy even when they are shut off. As long as it is plugged in, electricity will still be coming down the wire.
  • Microwaves use less than 1/2 the energy of the stove or oven.
  • On average, small portable electric appliancs such as a frying pan, grill, or toaster oven use only aout 1/3 of the electric power of an oven broiler.
  • You lose 20% to 50% of the heat each time you open the oven door to check food while it's cooking - and you slow down the cooking process.
  • For a full load, dishwashers use less water than washing dishes by hand. Overall, washing the same large amount of dishes by hand would typically use at least 6 more gallons of hot water.
  • Using new horizontal-axis clothes washers (also called "front loaders") will reduce water usage by at least 30% and lower energy used by 50%.
  • Most clothes get just as clean and are just as germ-free when washed in cold water.
  • Lowering your water heater temperature setting from 140 degrees to 120 degrees can reduce your water heating energy bill by more than 10%.
  • The average person will use about half as much hot water in a shower as in a bath.
  • Replacing your incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs can reduce your electricity usage for lighting up to 75% .

The main thing to keep in mind to save on your electricity bill is to reduce usage.

Changing a few habits can save energy and cut your electric bill.

I am a Registered Nurse and have been helping people for over 30 years. Often when people face financial challenges, they don't know where to begin, or even that help is often available for them.

I had often wished that there was a single source of information that could direct me and my patients/clients to know where to look for help and how to access it. It was never to be found.

That is why I have created Pat's Resource Guides; easy-to-use eBooks that quickly identify available resources and provide the important information that is needed to get help.
